TRIGGER WARNING - BINGE EATING DISORDER (BED)
This is something that’s been on my mind for a few days now and I have decided that it is something that needs to be spoken about. I’d like to talk about the term “binge eating”. I know a lot of you have watched my stories on this at the weekend and I was overwhelmed by the amount of responses, thanking me for explaining the term - especially from those that suffer/have suffered from BED.
First of all I’d like to say that the term “binge eating” is thrown around lightly because many people don’t really know/understand what it is. Binge Eating Disorder (BED) involves uncontrollably eating huge amounts of food in one sitting until uncomfortably full, feeling/being sick (sometimes willingly purging) and quite often it happens when the person suffering isn’t hungry and/or struggles to feel full. This is usually done secretly and is usually followed by tremendous amounts of shame/guilt. This can be caused by many different factors. It could be part of a cycle where you are trying to diet and you restrict yourself too much where you end up binging, it could be caused by a family history of EDs or commonly caused by psychological issues such as poor self-body image, stress, depression ect.
I want to stress that there is a HUGE difference between BED and over-indulging. We need to remember BED is an eating disorder, whereas over-indulging is where we have a little extra food than we normally would - eg a takeaway at the weekend, usually followed by sweet treats, or it could be going out to a restaurant and having a 3 course meal and eating more than you normally would. It’s so common for us to over-indulge and call it “binge eating” which needs to stop as it’s confusing the fact binging is an eating disorder & is something that requires treatment from a professional.
Hopefully this helps create a better understanding and hopefully we can start to limit the the phrase “binge eating” being used in the wrong context. I’m no expert, this is purely my own understanding from my own research. If you would like to chat/rant/need an ear then my DMs are always open ❤️
