There was also a whole country-inspired day at the 2024 Leading Women Defined gathering (@wearelwd ). @debratheconnectorlangford rocking the glam cowgirl beads @Marissa.Nance gave me this amazing quote: “I like to stand out with my clothing so I can stand back in a room.” Sherri Blount’s iridescent snake skin suit was just unequivocally fly. #blackwomenphotographers #losangeles #portraits #photojournalism #style #womenphotographers

The Leading Women Defined (@wearelwd ) gathering was one of the most nourishing, informative and uplifting spaces I’ve ever experienced. I was commissioned to photograph the stunning fits at this meeting of Black women CEOs for @huffpost , and I was consistently blown away by how kind and open everyone was. And stylish af, of course. Thank you to Damon Scheleur for the assignment! 1: @dionnenicoleharmon ’s beautiful hat and denim combo 2: @sislovespurple , who is the dope designer of Simone Smith Jewelry 3. @Modupe_c , wearing pants by Black designer @fenoel 4. demetriallucas impeccable details 5. @ashley_etienne popping a fabulous collar #blackwomenphotographers #losangeles #portraits #photojournalism #womenphotographers #style

You're officially booked and busy on Thursday, August 17th! Join The Pulitzer Center (@pulitzercenter ) at Las Fotos Project (@lasfotosproject ) to view work from photographer Tara Pixley (@tlpix ) and join an open mic hosted by Poet Vickie Vertiz!(@vickievertiz ) “Tara Pixley, a photographer based in southeastern Los Angeles, was one of the Pulitzer Center’s 2022 Diversify Photo Eyewitness grantees. Her project complicates Sontag’s claim. “Gold in the Hills, but Not for Us” portrays corroded oil wells dotting urban cul-de-sacs and adjoining children’s play structures in Inglewood; refineries grating blue skies with their trusses and scaffolding in Wilmington; and the people—Black and brown activists, parents, and creators—who go on living. Pixley’s photographs reimagine, indeed repossess, the relationship between Los Angeles and the people living in it from poisonous and extractive to inviting and sustainable. If you would like to write or read a poem for the open mic, consider “how we relate to the environment” as your prompt. You are more than welcome to select poetry that is not your own so long as you accurately attribute the work.” Registration is free, but required. RSVP with the link in our bio! #lasfotosproject #thepulitzercenter

Met and befriended this beautiful human at a pool party in Palm Springs, where we had one of those intense interactions of immediate connection, cavorting around the hotel, bridging our friend groups and doing an impromptu photo session as the sun set over the gorgeous desert landscape. I never saw them again and a week later I couldn’t even recall their name but I’ll never forget them, the way they made this one day sparkle and shine. #blackwomenphotographers #palmsprings #portraits #photojournalism

One of the most interesting days I’ve had lately was spent hanging out with people using ketamine to treat PTSD, depression and other mental health issues. Leon Valentine let me into their home to show me where they set up to take the mail order ketamine lozenges that were prescribed for them for chronic pain. Then, I was invited into Field Trip, a high end ketamine clinic in Santa Monica where people receive guided meditations through IV-administered ketamine. 1. Valentine said their cozy bedding in a corner of their childhood bedroom, replete with plush toys and curtains in their favorite shades of blue, pink and purple, create the perfect atmosphere for their ketamine sessions. 3. Psychotherapist Dr. Mike Dow offers patients guided ketamine psychotherapy at Field Trip. 4. Nurse practitioner May Fakhiriyazdi preps a dose of ketamine for a first-time patient. 5. A patient is guided on her first ketamine-assisted psychotherapy session 6. Patients can relax in one of the two Integration Lounges after they’ve finished their ketamine session. 7. At one point early in the psychotherapy session, the patient exclaimed “whoa” and laughed joyously. This whole day, I kept thinking how incredible and special it is every time someone lets me into their home, into their medical interventions, trusting me to tell their story as we collaboratively destigmatize things like psychotropic healing. This work is such a privilege and such a joy. Photographed for the Wall Street Journal. #blackwomenphotographers #photojournalism #losangeles #portraits #ketamine

I first met Hop Hopkins on assignment for Sierra Magazine, making his portrait to accompany an essay of his on the intersection of racism and environmental (in)justice. He brought me a chai latte before our hike of the Angeles crest and we were immediate fast friends, sharing stories of our teenagers and our aligned passions for climate + racial justice. A few months later, I got to work with him for a feature in the Chronicle of Philanthropy and was overjoyed to see him in his signature cowboy hat again. This time he invited me out to a very cool suburban LA farm where I geeked out over a couple sassy pigs and shared my obsession with goats. One of the best parts of being a photojournalist is that every single work day is a different experience. Over the years, as I’ve expanded into being an educator, a social impact consultant and an industry advocate, I find myself in increasingly unique places while helping to bring colleagues together or teaching workshops on strategic storytelling, journalism safety, and visual journalism. Last year my job took me to the beaches of Greece, a high-end ketamine clinic, San Francisco, Missouri, Detroit, New Orleans, New York City, Tallahassee, Palm Springs, lizard hunting for science, a paintball course and many, many more places. Looking forward to where work and life take me in 2023. #blackwomenphotographers #photojournalism #myoffice

I spent a beautiful day scrambling across San Diego rocks and hiking up hillsides while photographing behind the scenes with an all-female crew making a film for Northface about the legendary Black explorer and mountain climber Phil Henderson (@phil_henderson ). Phil also took us to his childhood home, introduced us to his daughter and shared stories of a life full of exploring the outdoors, blazing trails and being a total badass. This year Phil made history when he led the first all-Black expedition to summit Mount Everest (check out @fullcircleeverest ).
