Ready Steady by @safdar.bhaiya is one of the most thought provoking films I’ve seen in recent times. It’s not just a film, it’s a project that’s unique in its own way. Safdar made this film with 10 teenagers writing and acting in 5 shorts that reflect the reality of their lives. There is a lot of talk nowadays of ‘giving a voice’ to underrepresented communities and teenagers from marginalised backgrounds are one of them. Even when they are represented, there is a gaze we see them through, a lens cloudied with judgment. There is tokenism, an underlining of their ‘struggles’ and their inevitable hearts of gold. It’s obvious, boring and infantilising. Safdar’s film does none of these things. He simply creates a space for these teenagers to tell a story and they do so without mincing their words or ideas- exploring uncomfortable issues like caste, religion and even suicide without the customary moral viewpoint one is so used to nowadays. In some ways it’s filmmaking at its finest, these young filmmakers do not ask us to feel a certain way, they go for the jugular, the absolute truth, and then allow us to go on the journey that our minds take us on. And through all of this, they do it with humour and a deft touch that is invisible in most stories being told about teenagers in India today. This film has so much truth packed into every frame, one gets over the technical imperfections quite easily. The wonderful music binds and drives the stories forward. At the end of it, one wants to know more about their lives. One feels that they exist beyond the film, and that is the best thing one can say about a film, is it not? Congratulations to all the young filmmakers, but also, thank you Safdar for truly giving a space to them to tell their stories the way they want to, to self represent is to speak truth to power. This film will start debates about what a film is, and how we can create spaces for all kinds of communities to come forward and tell their own truth in the way they want to. In that way, this film is not just a film; at the very least it’s a project, and i believe, has the potential to become a very important movement. #readysteady

Couldn’t have had a better end to my travels! On my last day in Hanoi, we did a mini session with Miklós, Toopsi, Teesta and Ted in this paradise on earth @anatolia_in_hanoi . It made me think- would anyone want to do a residential workshop in Hanoi? I could plan one later this year then! Let me know :) #theactorasamaker
