A close-up of a Coral Tooth Fungus illuminated from behind. This is a rare European fungus due to "modern" forestry destroying its habitat. Among the reddest natural things I have ever seen is this Scarlet Ibis. The entire bird's plumage is scarlet red apart from the very tips of the longest primaries. A large portion of their diet consist of shrimp and other shellfish. These animals is the source of astaxanthin, which is an important component in the pigmentation that makes these birds red. Exactly one year ago today, Snyggve, aka Bob Jr. died, killed by three younger males. I followed Snyggve since he was only a few weeks old, and he grew up to be the most handsome male lion I ever saw. A Bat-eared Fox kit in Serengeti. The Bat-eared Fox is the only canid species that is truly insectivorous. It mainly eats termites but also consume other insects. However, they only rarely eat other food than insects, then usually spiders and scorpions but will occasionally eat an egg or a lizard. The large ears help keep their body from overheating. WELL DONE! Quite a few of you provided the correct answer to the quiz in my last post. Well done! The correct answer is that they are all flightless, none of them can fly. 1. Common ostrich, I think all of you knew that they cant fly. 2. Falkland Steamer Duck. Have a look at those short wings, too short for takeoff. Instead they use the wings to paddle across the surface when they need to spurt. While they do this, they look a bit like an old steamer boat, hence their name. 3. The Flightless cormorant is endemic to Galapagos and is the largest cormorant in the world. Also here, their short wings are useless for flight. This is even more clear in the image of this post. Please note their beautiful turquoise eyes. 4. A Gentoo penguin, I think it comes to no-ones surprise that they can't fly. 5. The Giant coot can actually fly as a youngster, but the adults are too heavy. 6. The Titicaca grebe is one of a few flightless grebes. Other birds that can't fly are among bird families like Emus, Cassowaries, Kiwis, Rheas, Rails, Parrots and possibly the Brown. I hope that you like these kind of posts. . . . #ostrich #duck #cormorant #penguin #coot #grebe #flightless #quiz #answer #birds #birdphotography #birdphoto #naturebydanielrosengren

If you study the images closely, you might find clues. Another clue is that around 60 bird species in the world have this trait in common. If you know or want to guess, please do so in the comments. Follow or stay tuned to find out the answer. . . . #quiz #quiztime #ostrich #duck #cormorant #penguin #coot #grebe #bird #birdquiz #naturebydanielrosengren

A White-vented Storm Petrel searching for food on the Pacific Ocean surface. Very little is is known about this species. So far, very few nests have been found. One theory is that the nest in the Atacama desert, the driest place on earth, where a dead chick was found.
