WHALES IN CRISIS: As whales traverse their migration routes along the United States’ West Coast, they are getting entangled in heavy fishing gear, which can lead to agonizing wounds and even death. Sadly, that was the fate for this entangled humpback whale. These ocean giants urgently need our help. That’s why we are fighting for change! Join us in protecting whales from deadly entanglements today to help ensure these majestic creatures can swim freely in the oceans they call home. Share some love for sea cows this #ManateeAppreciationDay ! 💙 There are three species of manatee alive today: Amazonian, African, and West Indian manatees. All three are slow-moving, gentle giants that love to graze down on aquatic vegetation like sea grass or algae. Manatees are social animals, and can gather in groups numbering in the hundreds! When in these aggregations, manatees can often be observed behaving in what looks like play, bumping into and rubbing against each other. But it's not all fun and games for these gentle giants — they face a serious threat from the plastic pollution crisis. It's far too easy for manatees to snack on plastic pollution instead of the aquatic vegetation they love. You can help make a meaningful difference for manatees with a symbolic adoption today! Each donation powers Oceana’s campaigns to stop plastic pollution at the source and protect ocean animals like manatees. Link in bio.

🐋 New research has found that even “minor” entanglements in fishing gear have major impacts on female North Atlantic right whales. These entanglements are connected to a lower chance of breeding, which is bad news for these critically endangered whales. With only around 356 individuals left, and just about 70 breeding females, each calf is critical to the survival of the species. But with fishing gear entanglements so common for these whales, if nothing changes soon, there will not be enough calves born to keep North Atlantic right whales alive. Tell @POTUS and @SecRaimondo to do more to protect the #RightWhaleToSave ! Link in bio. #RightWhale #NorthAtlanticRightWhale #Whales #EastCoast #USEastCoast #ScientificResearch #StandForOceans

Floating backwards! 🐠 This thorny tinselfish was spotted during our 2012 expedition to the Atlantic and Mediterranean, where we used an underwater robot to reach seamounts with peaks so deep they could not be explored by divers. Learn more about this expedition and what we found with the #linkinbio . 🌊💫

🐳 Known for their intelligence, their grace, and their beauty, whales are some of the most beloved creatures in our oceans. But today, they face a deadly threat: becoming entangled in fishing gear. It's not too late to make an impact and help reduce entanglements like this one. Help protect whales with a symbolic adoption today! Link in bio.

“The whale was looking at me like it was thinking ‘Why this? Why me?’ It was dying in a very slow, painful way, and it knew there was nothing that could be done to save it. I’m pretty sure it was suffering like that for months.” Photographer Alvaro Herrero named this photo “Hopeless” for a reason – because sadly, for this whale, there was no hope left. Although Herraro’s colleagues were able to free the whale from the fishing line wound tightly around its tail, the whale’s injuries were deadly. But it’s not too late to save other whales from this fate. Join the fight to protect whales in crisis today and your gift will be matched, $1-for-$1! 📸: @mekanphotography

🐟 Dive into the depths of the ocean with the pink frogmouth! Meet the pink frogmouth, also known as the "Chaunax!” Despite its awkward appearance, the frogmouth possesses a unique way of swimming. Rather than propelling itself with its fins like most fish, this deep-sea fish uses its pectoral fins to "walk" along the seabed! This particular pink frogmouth was spotted during Oceana's expedition to the Canary Islands in 2014 to document the waters around the island of El Hierro, map the seamounts north of Lanzarote and the seamounts of the Sahara. 🎥 © OCEANA

When @mekanphotography encountered this humpback whale off the coast of Baja California, he instantly knew something was wrong. Entangled in fishing gear, Nova – as @Oceana ’s team has affectionally come to call the whale – was dying a slow, painful death. And while Herrero's colleagues were able to free the whale from the fishing line, sadly it was too late for Nova. No animal should have to suffer like that. Join @oceana in the fight to protect whales from deadly fishing gear entanglements today. All gifts are matched 1:1, so your impact will be DOUBLED! Video: @mekanphotography
