Happy Women’s History Month to Mary J. Sullivan, one of the first woman park rangers in the National Park Service! Sullivan spent the summer of 1923 as a seasonal “registration agent” at Polebridge Station before becoming a permanent employee on July 1, 1924. She was employed about 10 weeks a year, until her retirement on March 31, 1931. Her husband, Thomas J. Sullivan, also worked in the park. Read more about Mary Sullivan at https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/a-new-first-permanent-woman-ranger.htm. Attached is a sepia-toned photo of Mary J. Sullivan, circa 1924. What are your tips for using the Leave No Trace principles online? Share them in the comments. Here's a few to get started. Encourage positive behavior. Posting about conservation, leave no trace, and safety helps spread the word and supports the mission of the National Park Service. Avoid geotagging or giving directions to areas off trail. Some sensitive areas are being destroyed by crowds seeking out these spots for the perfect social media photo. Don’t post a selfie while engaging in illegal activities like feeding wildlife. Also, if park officers see those kinds of posts, you may receive a citation in the mail. Did you know Glacier National Park is a key piece of the Pacific Northwest Trail? Rugged mountains, lush forests, and dramatic coastlines – all strung together by passion and persistence. Up on the Northeast edge of the park starts this 1,200-mile hiking trail that runs all the way to the Pacific Ocean on Washington's Olympic Coast. Along the way, the PNT crosses three national parks, seven national forests, and two other national scenic trails. It travels against the grain of several mountain ranges, including the Continental Divide, Whitefish Divide, Purcells, Selkirks, Kettles, Cascades, and Olympics. It was designated as the Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail by Congress in 2009. What moves you more, majestic landscapes? Or miniature moments of magic? Consider the approach of Glacier's hummingbirds: Savor the sweetness of life, just like they sip nectar from vibrant blooms. Utilize the little beauties, like strands of spider web to build a nest. Let your little iridescent feathers catch the sun and shine! When you think about Glacier, do you think about boats?! ⛴️ Ask a ranger, boats are a big deal here! Seen here, the Morning Eagle is a lake cruiser you can still ride in. She was originally named "Big Chief" and has been sailing Glacier's scenic waters since 1945. ️ Fun fact: She once needed to be moved from Swiftcurrent Lake up to Lake Josephine, so six college students spent six days hand-pulling her upstream! Talk about teamwork! Now, she's a proud member of the National Register of Historic Places, taking you on unforgettable journeys across Lake Josephine. ✨ Come aboard and discover Glacier's beauty from a whole new perspective! What's your secret to good wildlife sightings? Getting up early is one well known tip, but we also recommend binoculars. Binoculars unlock Glacier's hidden wonders: See wildlife up close, from soaring eagles to cliff-hugging goats. Unveil jaw-dropping details in mountains & landscapes. Enhance guided tours & spot what the ranger points out. Connect deeper with nature & spark your curiosity! Image: A moose standing in a pond as seen through binoculars.
